Automotive Filters Market: Opportunities and Challenges

Automotive Filters Market
Automotive Filters Market by Type (Air, Fuel, Oil, Cabin, Coolant, Brake Dust, Oil Separator, Transmission, Steering, Dryer Cartridge, EMI/EMC, Coolant Air Particle), Air & Cabin Filter Media, Fuel & Vehicle Type, Aftermarket – Global Forecast to 2025

The Automotive Filters Market (OE) is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 4.35% from USD 2.81 Billion in 2017 to USD 3.94 Billion by 2025. The aftermarket for automotive filters in 2017 was USD 21.60 billion, and it is projected to reach USD 23.31 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 1.14 % from 2018 to 2025.

Advancement in filters media/technology

A filter media is the core component of a filter. It is used to capture any unwanted and foreign particles. It is majorly made up of cellulose, synthetic, glass fiber, and activated carbon depending on the applications. Advancement in filter media types or technology would offer a huge opportunity for automotive filter manufacturers in the coming years.

Currently, cabin filters are offered to resist dust particles entering the vehicle. Most dust filters stop 100% of all particles that are 3 microns or larger and 95–99% of particles that are 1–3 microns in size. However, in the coming years, there would be a mass-market for dust and odor filters. The blend of dust and odor filters have a coating of activated charcoal or baking soda to absorb odor and air pollutants. Some of these filters may even be lightly perfumed to improve the driving experience. These filters are mostly used in premium and luxury cars.

Nowadays, most of the vehicle’s air intake filter is made up of cellulose media, which is very cost-effective. However, synthetic media types are gaining popularity and would have a decent market share in the future. This would be mainly because they have various advantages over the cellulose media, such as they are less sensitive to water, they offer increased flow area, and they provide high performance. These filters can be used to allow better airflow for combustion, resulting in higher fuel efficacy and lower emission.

Also, some of the potential changes may comprise equipping the lubrication system with lower viscosity oil and strengthening the oil filter to handle stress from increased Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), extended replacement cycle, and eco-friendly designs. Developments in oil filtration, including new forms of synthetic/cellulose filtration media, immensely improve the particulate holding competency without sacrificing the filter capacity.

Various advancements happening in the media type as well as in the technology domain to increase the performance or the replacement cycle of the filters would create immense opportunities for the manufacturers. All media types used in the current market would be obsolete in the future, and new media types would immerge to cater to the market owing to the increasing pollution and strict emission norms to combat that.

Unorganized aftermarket

The automotive filter aftermarket includes various OES and IAM. The IAM players of automotive filters are also giving a tough competition to the market leaders, especially in the countries such as China, as they can match the customer’s requirements by providing better quality filter products as compared to the Tier 1 companies at a lower cost. IAMs are the ones who manufacture and sell the automotive components outside the OEM and OES channels. This is done through warehouse distributors, retail outlets, and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) services. The independent aftermarket suppliers set a final price, which is 20–50% lesser than the OES parts.

Maintenance and replacement of filters are very easy which can be carried out by any local player. Many local players are getting involved in the aftermarket of filters as they provide cheap products that are easily available. The manufacturing of filters does not involve huge capital investments, and the raw material requirement for filters is very less, and they are easily available. So, the local players can manufacture filters at a very low cost as compared to the filter manufacturers and can cater to the domestic replacement market. Moreover, local manufacturers are using big filter brand’s names, such as Mann + Hummel, in their product to sell in the market which is the biggest threat to the companies. This is a threat to all automotive filter manufacturers and OESs as major manufacturers such as Mahle, Mann + Hummel, Donaldson, Sogefi, and Bosch have a presence in the OE as well as in the aftermarket.
