Black-Owned Book Printer Celebrate Two Major Achievements

BCP Digital Printing, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Black Classic Press, reached a significant milestone recently. The company celebrated the printing of its four millionth book. The company is also a recipient of the Baltimore Business Journal’s Family-Owned Business Award for 2021.

W. Paul Coates founded Black Classic Press as a publishing company in 1978. The company expanded by opening BCP Digital Printing as the first African American-owned digital book printing company in 1995. Using state-of-the-art equipment, BCP Digital Printing produces high-quality books and documents in short runs for corporations, government and non-profit organizations, individuals, and other book publishers. At a time when large, old-line printing companies are failing, Coates credits the longevity and success of his company to, “the early adoption of digital printing technology, our commitment to go the extra mile for customers and our guarantee that every book we print will meet our customers’ satisfaction.” BCP Digital Printing is currently run by Coates and two of his children, Kristance, administrative officer and Damani Coates, chief operations officer.

BCP Digital Printing celebrated its printing milestone shortly before being notified of its selection to receive the award from the Baltimore Business Journal. Coates reflected, “Printing our four millionth book and receiving the award at about the same time came as a surprise. I am especially pleased that the second generation is on board with me steering the business. We are in this for the long run. We are working hard and looking forward to printing our five millionth book!”
